The 2011 Edition was the 20th Anniversary of the Bigtwin Bikeshow and Dealer Expo
Bigtwin Bike Show & Dealer Expo 2011, Rosmalen – The Netherlands

In just one Freestyle class about sixty bikes competed in the Bigtwin Bike Show in Holland. With international competitors from England, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Hungary and various other European countries the Bigtwin Bike Show & Dealer Expo 2011, Rosmalen show is one of the main custom bike shows in Europe.

The recession has it’s down sides, but it sure brings out the best of the custom builders in terms of creativity, and with limited recourses and low budgets still the most impressive projects can be realized. That also reflects the style of today’s custom bikes; big and wild ‘no expenses spared’ built bikes are the minority nowadays, as we see more and more ‘common’ styled bikes. Only a few wild bikes attended the Bigtwin Bike Show & Dealer Expo 2011 in Rosmalen this year, such as Morten Christensen’s blown High Neck chopper from Norway, Paul Milbourne’s ‘Weird Fish’ Yamaha and the snakeskin trike built by U.K. based Trike Design. Right in the middle of the Bigtwin Bike Show & Dealer Expo 2011, Rosmalen the bikes stood side by side shining and sparkling, the audience gawking at the most fantastic creations.  These days not the amount of cash you throw at a bike is the main criterion for a winning custom bike, but far more important are finish and details. You don’t need a €100.000 bike with a 2.500cc engine to be a show winner. No, it might even be the contrary; the smaller the better it seemed when the prize giving ceremony started!

The judges picked the ten best bikes out of the sixty competing bikes in the Bigtwin Bike Show. Main criteria were styling, lines, engineering, paint job, and details. But especially home made parts and how inventive a builder is, was looked at by the judges; Erik of SPS, Ted Sands of PM and myself; Onno of Madness Photography and also freelance reporter of Bigtwin Magazine.

Generous sponsoring by Zodiac in the amount of €21.000 in vouchers guarantied big prizes for all the Bigtwin Bike Show 2011 in Rosmalen prizewinners. Harrison Billet added a voucher of €500 and on top of that three BikerBasic Pakkages for the numbers one, two and three were presented by Wiley X, Extreme Wear en Vulcavite. Each package contained a pair of Climate Control Sunglasses, a pair of Sartso Kevlar ‘Killer’ Jeans and a Vulcanet Pakkage.

Bigtwin Bikeshow & Dealer Expo overview
On Sunday afternoon the prize giving ceremony started, the competitors stood nervously waiting next to their bikes, not just nervous about hat position they ended in the Bigtwin Bike Show 2011, but also if their bikes would start once they were called up to the stage to collect their trophies! You had to ride up to stage with a running engine, if the bike does not run a giant chicken comes out to help you push the bike. The humiliation doesn’t stop there, cause through the speakers on full blast the ‘Chicken Song’ sounds! And that’s just to make sure that all the Bigtwin Bike Show competitors do have a running, rideable custom bike. Hey, it’s a custom bike show, not an art show!

Tenth Place: Mr. van de Auwera – H-D home built Shovelhead
This hardtail Shovelhead for sure is not just a main stream custombike with old school looks. The bike has incredible details and most of the parts are handmade by Belgian owner Lori. Very interesting parts are the under seat air suspension and the handlebars, that look as if they are part of the retro Springer forks.

Ninth Place: Peter Crooymans -  Triumph P3 Bobber Hardtail
Peter’s P3 Triumph is an old style bobber as a bobber should be. It’s hardtail frame, Triumph engine,  low mounted Sportster tank and a pair of spoke wheels are the main ingredients for this clean bobber.

Eighth Place: Second City Customs / Ian Cushing - Hell’s Bay Shovel
A very nice bike, this hardtail Shovelhead, with an alloy gas tank and many handmade parts. Flowing Lines and brass-look parts in combination with an incredible finish is what this bike is about. Nicely fabricated exhaust pipes and the big carburetor enhance the looks of the Shovelhead engine.

Seventh Place: Ron Hommerin -  Chopper Ironhead
Ron built this old style chopper, based on an Iron Head Sportster engine, together with his best friend Rene. They made the frame, gas tank, oil tank and handle bars all from scratch. The Springer front end and the brakes are from DNA. The round sweeping lines of  the frame gives this bike it’s distinct look and is matched by the curvy handle bars and exhaust pipes.
Some call him Kermit, some call him the Hulk… This hard green Yamaha XS650 with its ‘big tube’ frame is a joy for your eyes. The front end is extremely well engineered and is one of a kind. We can say the same about the rear brake system, just beautifully made. This bike is as basic as possible with a single seat, no fenders and no mufflers. The custom wheels match the bike very well.

Fifth Place: Lin Jefford - Destiny Chopper 2011
The Rose Tattoo inspired paint job gives her bike a nice feminine look without looking ‘girlie’. This bike has been built out of work shop leftovers. The nice old school narrow girder front end and  narrow painted spoke wheels fit beautiful to the frame which has been treated to an outstanding nice paint job as well. As always Destiny Cycles from the U.K. built a nice clean rideable bike.
‘Just for fun’ gebouwd, zo verklaart Lin!
Fourth Place: Voytec - Boardtracker
All the way from Poland master builder Voytec again surprised us with a cool and clean bike. ‘Show and go’; yes, his Boardtracker does look very nice and rides very well too. Eye catcher is the stainless steel exhaust, made out of 84 pieces. The homemade frame with its flowing lines looks outstanding. The thin colored spoke wheels fit this bike really well. The spring seat construction is extremely well engineered. The dropped fuel tanks with integrated oil tank gives this bike its bulldog-like stance.
The backbone of Rik’s Yamaha, named ‘Speedrod’  is a Zodiac hardtail frame. Short, fat and low, this bike has an aggressive and fast look. The frame has been shortened a few inches by Rik. A low mounted Sportster tank, old style sixteen inch wheels with balloon tires and the beautiful drum brakes complement the Hot Rod looks & styling of the ‘Speedrod’. The Hot Rod Styling is very well achieved, with loads of nicely self made and modified parts. This bike has a clean finish and gives it a unique appearance. The Hot Rod spirit is well captured in the ‘Speedrod’.
Second Place: Arno ‘RNO’ Overweel – ‘Slick Chick’ Suzuki LS650
Arno’s Suzuki ‘Slick Chick’ Savage; was his last creation, based on a Savage too, already an eye catcher, this one is engineering wise even more impressive. A supercharger gives the little 650 the extra needed ‘ boost’. But especially all the handmade parts and the wild looks of the ‘Slick Chick’ are spectacular. The two wheels of totally different design fit surprisingly well in the overall design. The hardtail is low, agile and fast. The many details and outstanding engineering make this bike ‘Top of the Bill’!
First Place: Larry Houghton - BSA ‘Son of a Gun’
The perfect bike. From whatever angle you look at this bike, whatever part you take a look at,  this bike is just perfect. The incredible engineering in combination with the beautiful flowing lines and details, make this the sexiest bike ever. The immaculate finish takes ‘Sun of a Gun’ to the highest level. Worldwide the bike competed in many shows and won the biggest trophy almost every time. Just like here, where this bike is without any doubt the Number 1 in the show! Larry Houghton built ‘Son of a Gun’ based on a 500cc BSA engine. And that’s basically the only part he didn’t make himself. Everything is handmade, including the alloy front end. A low cost – only 6000,- euro’s- prize winner. Is bigger always better? No fuckin’ way!
CONGRATULATIONS LARRY!
Is bigger always better? No fuckin’ way!

So, as you can see, the top three bikes are simple, plain old bikes with small, 600-650cc capacity engines. Extreme, big bikes with over the top engines no way guaranty you a prize winning spot in custom bike shows. Talent, vision and fantasy, and eye for details and the perfect finish are much more important. Add to that the fact that you can build a cool custom bike on a low budget basis. Do you have to be a professional custom bike builder? No, not at all. Not one of the top three prize winners is. Only three out of the top ten winners are professional bike builders! So get the torch, welder, grinder and your biggest hammer out, and start building!
With special thanks to all the Bigtwin Bike Show competitors, sponsors and Bigtwin Magazine readers! A special thanks to my friend and collegue Horst Rosler for the stage photo's!
